DYING IN THE RAIN
by

Lt. J. O. Witt
USS Preble (DIG-15)

Extracted from the Pacific Stars and Stripes 1967.

As I sit and watch the big guns blast,
And the planes fly over so loud and fast.
The sounds of the jungle of men dying in pain,
With no one to help them -- they die in the rain.
But soon all the guns and planes will cease,
And then the soldier will have a lasting peace.
Until then there's a war to be won.
It too will be over and done,
And all the soldiers will go home again,
There they can live like decent men.
They can sing, dance, laugh and cry,
And not a one will lay in the rain and die.
