WALK STRAIGHT AND TALL
by

Extracted from the Pacific Stars and Stripes 1967.

Dear Heavenly Father, creator of all,
Let me walk, among my men, straight and tall.
Assist me to lead these men,
Through the jungle heat and the blinding rain.
As we face our enemy in this foreign land,
Place on my shoulder your protective hand.
As we go to battle, God speed,
And help me possess the wisdom and leadership I need.
Follow our footsteps down this twisting trail.
Please don't let my courage fail,
If fight we must in this living hell,
Let us fight and do it well,
Help us to destroy this enemy of all free men,
So that we can return home in peace again.
Please don't let us lose this land we've gained,
Don't let our aim be blinded by this pouring rain.
Give us Your protective shield and guiding light,
To live through this terrifying night.
Grant us your moon to light up your sky,
Permit us to see another night go by.
Let us be allowed to go to bed without fright,
And sleep just one peaceful night,
Oh, let me hear you whisper in the ear,
"Go, My Sergeant, I lead you, have no fear."
Dear Father, if death should penetrate Your protective shield,
And I should fall in this battlefield;
Give strength to my children and wife to understand,
Why I gave up my life in this foreign land.
Yes, if my men and I should fall,
We understand, you have called.
We would have finally found peace and rest,
And we'll hold our head up high, we've done our best.
So we follow You, Our Master, for we are your sheep,
And we'll continue until we've won or have earned that eternal sleep.
I'm ready dear God, if to Your heavenly home I'm called,
Just let me hear my men say,
"There goes old Sarge, still
Walking straight and tall."
