A SOLDIER KNOWS

I often stop and wonder why,
So many men should have to die,
Here in a country so far from home,
Away from his family and the loved ones he's known.
Living a way of life he did not choose,
Fighting for the freedoms that these people might lose,
Defending the land on his country's call,
Till a sniper's bullet ended it all.
And now it is over, the fighting and hate,
His long journey is ended at heaven's open gate.
So ends this story which is simple yet true
Knowing that someday, this could happen to you.
But fight on we must, and fight on we will,
Till every enemy force, is cut down to nil.
