Boondock Bards
THE UNWANTED LAD
by
Sp4 Eddie Lawson
C Co., 22d Inf.
Extracted
from the Pacific Stars and Stripes 1967.
They fight, they
struggle,
They dig, they die.
Yet all you'll hear,
Is their battle cry.
He fights the Cong by night and day,
This same young man you turned away.
The one whoh begged you for the loaf of bread,
But you demanded he leave instead.
Or the poorest boy in the neighborhood,
Whom everyone thought to be no good.
He wore big patches on his clothes,
Why no one liked him, everyone knows.
Because he was a poor boy,
Who had no money,
Everyone laughed,
And said he looked funny.
Or the little boy whose dad was a drunk,
And everyone said, "Just another little punk."
And nobody wanted him close to their home,
For they didn't want him around children of their own.
So everytime the little boy would go near,
The parents would say, "Now Johnny, come here."
He was a lost little fellow,
With no place to go.
No one he could play with,
They'd always say "No!"
So, before you decide to tell a lad "No,"
Just ask yourself this, "Will he have to go?"
To fight the grim battle,
Which
most of us know.
That's where our young men are going to go.
So now in my closing,
I want to say this,
It's some of thse same unwanted children,
Who are fighting
with their fists,
To save peoples' lives,
Who don't have to fight.
So mister just think,
That somewhere tonight,
A poor boy is dying,
So you may live right.
