Book Review

Shovelhead Red "The Drifter's Way"

Written by Roy Yelverton
AKA: "Uncle Roy"

Reviewed by John Weakly

Uncle Roy's first book in a series of three books about the adventures of Shovelhead Red. Red is a biker in the true sense. An ex-Navy guy, Red begins his adventures as a machinists. He looses his job and he sets off into Biker adventures. You'll find some part of you in the story.

Roy does an excellent job developing the story line and keeps you begging for more. Bikers will enjoy the language of the book and Red's experiences. I'd rate this book as adult material due to some wording and descriptions. It comes in paper back form and is a full 223 pages.

Contact Uncle Roy at his web site Riders' Roost for ordering information. This would be a great biker gift for Christmas. Tell Roy you heard about it here.

About the author.

Roy Yelverton, known to thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts as Uncle Roy, is a biker writer who also owns and operates Riders' Roost (Motorcycle only) Resort in the mountains of North Carolina, where he lives and writes. He is a 20 year veteran of the U.S. Navy, and has run Riders' Roost, with his brother Bruce Colburn, for 12 years.

Not surprisingly, Roy is also a serious motorcycle enthusiast. His current bike is a 89 Softail model with over 225,000 mile on her; and it's bike number five. Estimated total lifetime mileage somewhere around 600,000 and growing. We ain't talkin' no plastic biker here.

Being a veteran of the long-ride, including several coast to coast journeys, when Roy describes things and palaces, you know he's probably been there. When he tells of the mysterious wonder of motorcycling, freedom of the road, and the highway's magic, you can bet he's DEFINITELY been there.

There is an axiom for writers that states: 'write what you know'. If this be sound advice, then Uncle Roy should certainly be qualified. Aside from extensive time spent astride the Harley, his life every summer, is a regular parade of motorcycle people of every type and stripe, who come to enjoy the wonderful setting at Riders' Roost, fantastic riding terrain in Western North Carolina, and the awesome Blue Ridge Parkway.

With several short stories published, this is Roy's first full-length novel. Good news! It's also book one of a three book series featuring the character Shovelhead Red. So, if you dig this story and want more, all you have to do is stay alive, and not broke, because book two of the series will be available sometime in 2002, stay tuned as it develops. Between now and the issue of book two, look for a volume of Roy's Biker poetry, just to hold you over.
